Separation anxiety in dogs is not an uncommon problem.  Most of us would face problems when we try to leave house and leaving the dog behind. Your dog might just start barking when you leave the house and that is all. A worse case of dog separation anxiety might cause your dog to take on a destructive behavior and mess up your house or barking non-stop for hours.

The Sources of Separation Anxiety in Dogs

Dogs, like lions or elephants, are pack animals. They are very attached to you, their master, and will become very agitated when you leave the house. Most of the time they feel that way because they have grown used to you giving affection when you want to leave the house.

There is no direct cause as to why they should become agitated even though they do not like it when they are left alone.

He becomes agitated because of the attention you give before you leave the house and after you come back. If you to do this every morning before you go work, then you would reinforce this behavior and the dog loses control of his feelings when you are gone.

Reducing Separation Anxiety in Dogs

Here is a few easy ways to help reduce the anxiety level when you need to leave your dog alone:

Add variation to your routine: Do not always follow the same routine when leaving. Some dogs know the sound of alarm means you need to leave the house and they will start to act strangely. You can counter this by changing when your alarm goes off, wake up early, get dressed a little later and wait a while to leave the house after you grabbed the keys.

Don’t encourage it: If you have to hug your dog before your leave and after you come back, then you are on encouraging his behavior. So stop giving attention to him every time you leave and come back so you can reduce your dog’s separation anxiety. Do not give him any attention when you leave the house and ignore his whining. Also ignore him for the first 10-15 minutes after you have come back home.

Train him to endure more: Some dogs will whine the moment the door closes. To counter this, you should start leaving the house for short periods of time. Just go out for a few seconds and then come back home. Do this a few more times but with longer period each time. You want to show him that you will be back so he can endure his anxiety. Again, you do not want to encourage him by showing too much affection before you leave and after you return.

These solutions are actually very kind

You might feel that all these solution is cruel to your dog but it is actually helping him to become more relaxed when you are gone and also to tell him that you will be back soon. So this is actually good for their mental and physical well-being.

Do not let your dog to suffer from anxiety problems, even if you think the problem is very small.  Separation anxiety in dogs is very curable.
