Electronic dog fencing and cat fencing is the perfect way to keep your dog or cat safe and secure in the yard without having to put up expensive fencing. In some localities you may be restricted from installing a conventional wood, vinyl or chain link fence. No matter what your reasoning, electronic dog fencing offers an affordable cost saving alternative for pet safety and it’s virtually invisible. These systems can provide pet safety over an extremely large area making them very flexible.

You can choose from two types of electronic dog fence, one being an underground fence and the other a wireless fence which provides you with portability. Both the underground and the wireless system work similarly as they both send out a signal to a receiver collar worn by your pets. If your pet gets to close to the perimeter area, the receiver collar will administer an effective but harmless correction, keeping your dogs or cats safely contained on your property . It is strongly recommended that the dog or cat is trained as to where the boundaries are and with both systems small flags that can be stuck into the ground are provided. The flags are used to mark out the path of the boundary so you know where it is and to aid training. This article will describe both the underground and wireless systems.

The underground fence or wired system is usually the less expensive fence system of the two and utilizes a wire normally buried a couple of inches below grade around the property. The underground fence can also be installed above ground with the use of sod staples. The wire starts and finishes at a transmitter which needs to be placed in a shed or garage, or any other place that protects it from the elements. A power source will be needed to power the transmitter. The containment area covered by the fence could be a typical suburban yard or vast acreage depending on the model purchased. Imagine the cost of erecting a traditional fence for that area! Once set up, the dog wears the receiver collar and as it draws close to the wire marking the boundary, it receives a signal from the transmitter that corrects the dog and brings him back into the yard.

The second option is the so-called wireless fence system. The wireless system is considerably easier to install as there is no wire to run or bury. Plug it in, set the transmitters boundary range and begin the training process. It is also much more flexible as it allows you to change the range as you need to. It is slightly more expensive than the hard- wired system, but its portability means you could take it along with your dog on a camping vacation, or wherever you may be traveling. If you have need for a larger containment area, additional transmitters can be purchase to increase the coverage area.

This system works by sending the signal out in a perfect radius which can be adjust from say 30 feet up to about 3/4 of an acre depending on the system you purchase. As the dog approaches the limits of the range, the signal between collar and transmitter grows weaker until such a time the collar activates and corrects the dog, again bringing it back within the boundary.

No matter which system you decide upon, underground fence or wireless fence for your pet fencing needs, you can rest assured that the system will deliver a low-cost efficient and effective option to conventional fencing and keep your pets safe and sound on your property.
