Ideally, you reverse train your dog as a puppy. A full-grown dog that has never been in a box will have it harder to adapt to small space and may grow anxious. A puppy will also be a bit upset, but adjusts much faster, and if the puppy is never possible to sleep in your bed with you, it will probably not something to be angry about.

It is best to place the boxes in the family room where a lot of people will be. In the night, set the crate in the bedroom to give them a secure presence in the vicinity. Eventually, after a month or so you should be able to leave them in one place, but now to be close to keep them calm and safe.

When you put the puppy in the crate, make sure he has a clean, comfortable place to sleep, a source of water, and a toy to play with. The crate should be large enough for him to sleep in. If he can walk around in it, he can make a mess of it. As long as the dog can turn around in the box, it is comfortable for them and not inhumane.

When in the early stages of training your lab in the crate, make sure not to pull the dog from the crate when he is upset. This will only teach your puppy that if he makes a fuss, you give him attention. Make sure to only take the puppy from the crate when he quieted down for at least 5 minutes. Then greet him with a lot of attention and maybe a treat to reinforce that he did it right.

Initially, try to leave your puppy in the crate for short periods of time – an hour or two at a time. As he gets older, increase the time to match a full night’s sleep or a day on the job.

If you learn how to properly crate train your lab, you will be able to ensure your dog is never too loud, destructive, or anxious when you leave. A puppy adapts faster too, which is much less stressful for everyone in the house.  In the end you will see that crate training dogs is not a monumental task but quite achievable with a little effort.
