Find The Right Approach to Labrador Training

Looking for a new lab puppy for your family? Then you may be in need of Labrador training.  A Labrador may be exactly what you need. Labradors make excellent family dogs as they are both gentle and strong. These animals are both friendly and outgoing and they are highly intelligent. Labrador Retrievers are originally from Newfoundland and are one of the oldest dog breeds recognized in the world. They were used by fisherman to retrieve nets and still love to swim. There are two main types. You may choose either the English or the American breed and these dogs can be used for a variety of jobs. Proper Labrador training is required though.

Unique Temperament Makes Labrador Training Easy

Labradors are unique in terms of their temperament. They make the perfect family dog for this reason. A Labrador Retriever is not only gentle and affectionate, he is very attached to his family and loves to spend time engaging in activities with family members. Separation anxiety can be an issue as a result and these animals can destroy things if left alone too long. When paid attention to, these dogs are very dependable and good natured. They will work to please their owners and interact great with children and other animals. Labrador training is essential though to get a dog that your family loves as much as he loves you.

Labrador Retrievers are generally healthy dogs, but do have a few problems commonly seen with the breed. Elbow and hip dysplasia can be a problem as well as blindness. Labs are susceptible to Progressive Retinal Atrophy and will also need to be checked for cataracts as they age. The biggest problem often seen with these dogs though is weight issues. Exercise is essential and your dog must be exercised on a regular basis. Along with a proper diet, exercise will prevent your dog from becoming overweight. This is just as important as Labrador training.

Labrador training is very easy if done right. This breed of dog is eager to please and will work hard to behave as you want. Early training is important as these dogs grow quickly and will be hard to control once they are full size. The use of non violent, positive training combined with rewards is the best method. Guidelines and boundaries must be set and socialization is very important. Start with the basic commands and then move to more difficult ones. Your dog will enjoy the stimulation and training will be complete in no time at all.

Don’t be intimidated by the challenge of Labrador training.  It just takes a little preparation on your part to get organized and to have a plan for each session with the dog.  If you have a goal in mind each time you engage the dog you will see the progression and it will be motivating for you and the dog.  Just take it one step at a time.  In no time you will have a properly trained Lab and both of you will enjoy each other for years to come.
